Last week, on December 11 2025, the Lancashire Police Museum (located within Lancaster Castle) was visited by the world-renowned physicist, BBC presenter, author and musician Professor Brian Cox.
Professor Cox, who was in Lancaster to deliver a talk the night before, was approached by a Museum Volunteer whilst at Lancaster Castle, who offered to give him a tour around the museum.
Lancashire Police Museum Coordinator, Sabine Skae said: “It was such an unexpected visit. Museum Volunteer Dave Owen and I were sitting near him in a cafe, and Dave went over to offer the Professor an introduction to the museum. Much to our delight, he agreed!
“We wanted to let him enjoy his visit in peace. He had a good look round the museum, which features some of Lancashire's most infamous cases including Dr Buck Ruxton’s bath, the Morecambe Bay Cockling Disaster and the June Devaney murder in 1948.
“I think the visit was thoroughly enjoyed by all!”
Located in Lancaster Castle’s former prison A wing, the Lancashire Police Museum is a free attraction, open to the public every Thursday and Friday. It offers visitors a trip through time and the opportunity to learn about some of the pivotal moments across Lancashire Constabulary’s history, delving into some incredible historical cases and how Lancashire Police solved them.
The museum also delivers educational talks to children of all ages and abilities. During a visit, the group receives five different talks covering topics such as the different roles in policing, solving crimes with forensics (with Lancashire examples), law and order in nineteenth century Lancashire, and prisons and policing over the years. Visits usually last around an hour and are free of charge.
