A man has been given a football banning order for running on to the pitch at Accrington Stanley’s Wham Stadium.

Terence Griffiths, 34, jumped over a barrier from the Coppice Terrace to celebrate Tranmere Rovers’ 101st minute equaliser in the 3-3 draw with Stanley on 12th April.

Griffiths ran on the pitch with his arms raised and was seen to attempting to hug a Tranmere player before running towards the centre of the pitch.

He was later identified and given a postal requisition to appear in court.

Griffiths, of Beckwith Street, Birkenhead, pleaded guilty at Blackburn Magistrates Court on Thursday (23rd July) to going on to the playing area at a football match.

The court imposed a three-year football banning order, fined him £40 and ordered him to pay £85 costs.

PC Ross Bosdorff, dedicated football officer for Accrington Stanley FC, said: “Running on to a football pitch is completely unacceptable and won’t be tolerated by Lancashire Police.

“Such actions disrupt the game and can put players at unnecessary risk.

“We will take action against fans who enter the playing area during matches.”
