Saturday, April 25, 2026

We have charged a man with murder following a fatal collision in Accrington town centre.

Our officers were called by the ambulance service shortly after 10pm on Wednesday 22d April after a man was struck by a VW Passat car at the junction of Blackburn Road and Birch Street.

The victim, Matthew Weller, 44, suffered serious injuries and despite the best efforts of medical personnel, very sadly died later in hospital.

His family continue to be supported by specially trained officers.

The VW Passat failed to stop at the scene and was later found abandoned.

A 22-year-old man was arrested on Thursday evening on suspicion of murder, while three men aged 17 and a man aged 18 were arrested earlier that day.

Following consultation with the Crown Prosecution Service, Muhammad Haarith, 22, of Exchange Street, Accrington, has been charged with the murder of Mr Weller.

He’s been remanded in custody to appear at Preston Magistrates Court today (25th April).

The four other men who were arrested have been released on bail with conditions, pending further enquiries.
