Operation Drive Insured: 77 uninsured cars seized in seven days

Tuesday, April 28, 2026

Operation Drive Insured has been live across Lancashire last week, running from Monday 20th to Sunday 26th April.

For seven days, Lancashire Police have been stepping up action to seize uninsured vehicles to make our roads safer. Officers seized 77 cars in just one week, with 24 seized on the second day of the operation alone.

Uninsured drivers are statistically more likely to be involved in collisions and are more likely to be linked to wider criminal activity.

If you’re caught without insurance, you could face a £300 fine, six penalty points on your licence, and have your vehicle seized (and potentially crushed).

If the case goes to court, you may face an unlimited fine and a possible driving ban. Finally, as driving convictions can appear in background checks, it’s likely that your job prospects will be impacted, and insurance costs increased.

Chief Inspector John Jennings-Wharton of Lancashire Police’s Roads Policing Unit said:

“Uninsured drivers pose a serious risk, not only to themselves but to everyone else on the road. Every collision affects real families, and lives can be turned upside down in a moment, and having been a Family Liaison Officer for many years I have sadly witnessed firsthand the devastation caused to families.

“By taking 77 uninsured vehicles off the roads during Operation Drive Insured, we have helped make our communities safer and reinforced a clear message: driving without insurance is irresponsible and will not be tolerated.

“This week of action highlights our efforts in targeting uninsured drivers, however I want to make it clear that we target them every day of the year. Last year Lancashire officers seized 4,664 vehicles due to document offences.

“Everyone deserves to feel safe on our roads, and we will continue to do all we can to ensure they do.”
