A sex offender has been sentenced after admitting to indecently assaulting a child in the 1980s.

Gary O’Shea, 63, committed the offence against the girl who was sat on a sofa in his house in Whitworth when she was aged either eight or nine.

When the victim objected to what O’Shea was doing, he told her: “It’s OK, there’s nothing wrong.”

The brave victim attended Burnley Police Station in September 2023 to report what  O’Shea had done to her.

O’Shea, of Newark Road, Rochdale, was interviewed and charged.

He pleaded guilty to one count of indecently assaulting a child under 13 when he appeared at Burnley Crown Court yesterday (26th January) and received a 12-month conditional discharge.
