A former police officer has been jailed after admitting to perverting the course of justice.
Samarah Kamal, who was a constable on our East Response Investigations Team, was jailed for nine and a half months at Liverpool Crown Court last week (11th March), having admitted the offence at the same court on 12th February.
On 24th July 2023 officers from our Anti-Corruption Unit attempted to contact Kamal in relation to a different matter. Enquiries found that Kamal had phoned in sick to work and wasn’t present at her home address when officers attended.
Calls were made to Kamal’s personal mobile phone number at 2.56pm and 2.59pm but were unanswered. At 3pm the investigating officer received a missed call from Kamal’s phone and recalled her at 3.02pm.
Kamal agreed to meet the investigating officer at their location and arrived at 3.11pm, where she was subsequently arrested.
Kamal was searched - as was her home - and it was discovered that in the nine minutes between speaking to the investigating officer and arriving at their location, she had disposed of her mobile phone.
It was the disposal of the mobile phone and the subsequent loss of evidence, that led to consultation with Crown Prosecution Service and Kamal, 27, of Fletcher Road, Preston, was charged with perverting the course of justice.
Kamal was dismissed from Lancashire Constabulary following an Accelerated Misconduct Hearing last year. Her name has been added to the Barred List.
