Keeping East Lancashire safe after dark: Nightsafe in action

Friday, October 9, 2026

If you’ve enjoyed a night out in East Lancashire recently, you might have noticed our police officers on patrol in Blackburn with Darwen, Hyndburn, and Burnley, as part of Nightsafe.

Nightsafe is a Lancashire-wide initiative which aims to make our town centres and nighttime economy safer for everyone to enjoy. It focuses on preventing crime, tackling anti-social behaviour, safeguarding vulnerable people, and creating an environment where everyone can enjoy a night out, feeling safe and supported.

Officers involved in the initiative carry out high-visibility patrols and work alongside licensed premises, door staff and partner agencies, while engaging with and safeguarding the public.

Safer Neighbourhoods Inspector Liz Penson said: "We are committed to keeping East Lancashire's nighttime economy a safe and welcoming place for everyone. Nightsafe is all about being proactive and visible in our town centres, helping people enjoy a safe night out while preventing issues before they escalate. By carrying out high-visibility patrols and working closely with our partners, we're able to provide reassurance to the public, identify vulnerability, and intervene early where needed. Our officers are there to support people, safeguard those who may be at risk, and ensure everyone can enjoy East Lancashire's nightlife safely and confidently. Our officers are here to help keep the public safe and get them home safely."

There are also ways that you can help stay safe while enjoying East Lancashire’s nightlife. These include:

  • Never leave your drink unattended and avoid accepting drinks from people you don't know.
  • Keep your phone charged and let friends or family know your plans.
  • Stay with friends and look out for each other throughout the evening.
  • Plan your journey home in advance and use licensed transport providers where possible.
  • If you see someone who appears vulnerable, intoxicated, distressed or at risk, speak to a member of venue staff, door staff or one of our officers.
  • If something doesn't feel right, trust your instincts and report it to us.

We want everyone to enjoy a safe night out and get home safely. If you see our officers out and about while enjoying your night out in East Lancashire, know that they are there to keep you safe.
