Safer Camera Technology Introduced to Improve Road Safety across Lancashire

New technology is being introduced to help improve road safety across Lancashire’s road network with the introduction of five new Sentio Shield safety cameras.

The new cameras will replace existing Gatso cameras at locations where speeding is a real risk to public safety. They are not ULEZ cameras or ANPR cameras.

They are specifically designed to support road safety enforcement by monitoring vehicle speeds.

The new cameras provide a significant enhancement to existing enforcement capability, operating 24 hours a day, seven days a week, monitoring traffic in both directions.

They have been commissioned as part of Lancashire Police’s ongoing efforts to reduce those killed and seriously injured on our roads and encourage safer driving.

The introduction of the cameras forms part of a wider commitment to using technology, enforcement, and engagement to influence driver behaviour and protect those who use the road network.

By calming traffic speeds, these cameras act as a clear reminder to slow down, making our neighbourhoods safer for everyone.

Helen Porter, Head of our Safer Roads Unit said: “These new cameras give us an enhanced capability to monitor locations continuously, including overnight, and in both directions. This means we can make better use of technology and resources whilst targeting enforcement.

“This is not simply about issuing penalties. Our aim is to change driver behaviour, reduce risk and prevent people from being killed or seriously injured on our roads.

“Drivers should expect enforcement across our roads where risk-taking behaviour is identified. We will continue to use education and engagement, alongside other interventions, to encourage lasting behaviour changes.

“These safety cameras are a vital tool to encourage drivers to think about their speed, choose a safer speed limit, and make sure that everyone gets home safely at the end of the day.”
